An announcement went out a few years ago that Aperture would terminate in 1967 because by then an objective would have been accomplished. A reference was also made to the dates of Camera Work 1902-1917. The dates of Aperture 1952-1967 were intended to imply the completion of a cycle.
Circumstances have altered since that announcement which add up to continuation. When Michael Hoffman became the publisher of Aperture its physical growth was assured, and a new cycle was started. A new cycle suggests that a second objective be undertaken, a new branch seen on the growing tree.
We are always astonished at the appearance of correspondences between centers and circumferences. So we wonder why the beginning of a change in Aperture corresponds in time to a new phase in our own growth. Remembering that the first cycle unfolded differently than we expected, we further wonder how the present cycle will unfold.
Aperture will continue to work in the wide, broad, deep and significant world of photography outside of the precincts of photojournalism, advertising and technology. We do so because the limited objectives of these branches dominate the present-day photographic environment and threaten to swamp civilization. We do so to help maintain in full the breadth and scope of photography and to keep it growing in humanness.
To whatever reason is behind the change, or whatever Grace seems to guide growth, we give thanks.
