ELEGGUA’S EYES*

tonight before the doors of the big red house I've seen the eyes of the warrior again eleggua tongue red with blood like the heart of irons gold feet one larger the fiery roof the rearing beaming chest

bursting out in shrieks eleggua leaps imagines songs grazes space with a copper dagger who will consent to him if not the stone if not the white coconut tree who will gather the shells of his eyes

soon he won’t know if Olofi has lost his way and nothing of the rites nor of the animals that honor him nor of the magic sword nor of the whistlings in the night

if eleggua’s eyes look back they will look back across the stinking river where the gods drew off into the distance where fish swam who then will know the birdsongs the great eleggua ties my hands unties them now runs away and under the yagruma tree the secret lies heads the sun and something whistling the sole power of the dark road

LOS OJOS DE ELEGGUA

esta noche junto a las puertas del caserón rojizo he vuelto a ver los ojos del guerrero eleggua la lengua roja de sangre como el corazón de los hierros los pies dorados desiguales la tez de fuego el pecho encabritado y sonriente

acaba de estallar en gritos eleggua salta imagina los cantos roza el espacio con un puñal de cobre quién le consentirá si no es la piedra o el coco blanco quién recogerá los caracoles de sus ojos

ya no sabrá de Olofi si ha perdido el camino ya no sabrá de los rituales ni de los animales en su honor ni de la lanza mágica ni de los silbidos en la noche

si los ojos de la eleggua regresaran volverían a atravesar el río pujante donde los dioses se alejaban donde existían los peces quién sabrá entonces del cantar de los pájaros el gran eleggua ata mis manos y las abre y ya huye y bajo la yagruma está el secreto las cabezas el sol y lo que silba como único poder del oscuro camino

*Eleggua, a Yoruba orisha, known as a trickster; Olofi, another orisha, an omnipotent divinity, creator of the universe. Red with blood like the heart of irons refers to the-sacrifice of an animal in traditional rites; iron is an attribute of Eleggua.
